Primary education in the UK covers ages 5-11 (England) and ages 5-12 (Scotland). It provides a broad foundation in literacy, numeracy, science, and other key subjects, following different curricula in each nation.
Both systems aim to develop well-rounded learners and prepare them for secondary education (S1 in Scotland, Year 7 in England).
England (Ages 5–11)
Key Stage 1 (KS1) (Ages 5–7): Focus on basic literacy, numeracy, and foundational subjects.
Key Stage 2 (KS2) (Ages 7–11): Subjects expand to include science, history, geography, and computing.
Assessment: Students take SATs (Standard Assessment Tests) in Year 2 (KS1) and Year 6 (KS2) to assess progress before secondary school.
Scotland (Ages 5-12)
Curriculum for Excellence (CfE): Structured into Early, First, and Second Levels, covering Primary 1 to Primary 7.
Emphasis on holistic learning, creativity, and problem-solving.
Assessment: No national exams; progress is tracked through teacher assessments and Scottish National Standardised Assessments (SNSA) in P1, P4, and P7 (not pass-or-fail).
Primary Education in Scotland follows the Curriculum for Excellence (CfE) and is divided into different learning levels. It provides a broad education with a focus on literacy, numeracy, health, and well-being.
The structure follows Primary 1 to Primary 7, but at BVL-All Sciences, we only take pupils from Primary 3 onward.
At BVL-all sciences, the tutors provided content from all exam boards, which prepared us for anything we might face in our exams. The slides were filled with diagrams and images that simplified complex ideas, making it much easier to grasp the topics.
